Film Editing
The specialisation area of Film Editing educates experts and thinkers capable of planning and implementing film post-production, or film editors. Studies in Film Editing lay a good foundation for developing into an independent artist with a capacity to develop cinematic expression or focus on research in this area.
The foundation of this specialisation area is that the student learns to master cinematic narrative and other visual entities. The tuition is based on the entire aesthetic tradition of film editing as well as possibilities offered by the latest technology. The principal aim of the specialisation area is to transfer theory relevant to film editing into practical exercises and to produce creative thinking based on personal experience.
The task of the film editor is to assess the functioning of the screenplay, find the final form of the film in the filmed material and produce the intended emotional effect in the viewer. A film editor needs to have an ability to empathise and to understand interpersonal relations and the wider and in-depth meanings of the narrative. A film editor needs to have a good idea of film history and the expressive devices of various genres. A good ability to read images, sense of rhythm and skill in perceiving structures instil in the student courage to produce new solutions during the editing process. Communication and team work skills are basic requisites for progressing in the profession.
